Is Oil Evil?

Is your oil consumption a part of the problem?

Indeed, our oil consumption plays a role in the oil-related issues today. Though minimal, personal consumption of oil slowly builds upon one another's in order to become what is has today. Even to use this very computer, we have indirectly consumed oil. Due to the fact that this device as most likely transported by an oil-consuming transportation method, we have consumed oil. More obviously, even to get from "point a to point b", the majority of the metropolitan Detroit area utilizes cars. These automobiles are powered by oil and fuel nonetheless, and therefore add to our contribution as oil consumers. This method of transportation is also popular in the transportation of many commonly used goods today. In fact, many of these goods are produced by the consumption of oil. Since, we consume these goods, we are but once again indirectly using more and more oil on a daily basis. This is a large part of the reason why our economy today is so reliant upon oil, and therefore the expenditure of it increases. Hence, we strongly believe that we are indeed a part of the probelm today.

What effect does oil have on our environment?

Oil today, has a very negative effect upon our environment. Oil is commonly used to power the majority of technological devices we have today. Some of these include: factories, home appliances, automobiles, etc... Since these are a large part of our economy today, oil is being consumed according; in large amounts. This has caused many environmental issues today. Let us begin by looking at the most basic point of view, the automobile industry. Car parts are often made outside of the country in places where it is more cost effective (i.e. Mexico). Both the transportation there and back often requires oil. Then the factory puts the parts together, and often times powering their devices, is oil. Once the cars are made, they are transported to dealerships, and sold. The oil consumption is outrageous, and once sold the consumer will continue to utilize oil. The amount of emissions alone account for the prevalence of pollution today. Therefore, the EPA has set certain standards upon vehicles in order to limit this very negative effect.  Furthermore, the smoke emitted from the factory buildings is also a large contributor to this. Moreover, the goods supplied by the consumption of oil are often times incorrectly disposed of, therefore polluting our earth. The list is never-ending, however oil has a largely negative effect upon our environment today.

Question #3 Are there any viable energy alternatives?

Oil is a resource that many people depend on every day. Although, there are many problems with the use of oil there are not many other resources to replace oil. Fuel is not the same as oil used in cooking. The oil used in cooking can be easily replaced to fit your need. Unfortunately, we cannot the same for the fuel. However, hybrid cars have become very popular these days for conserving oil. Though these types of car are expensive and still require gas to function, they use less oil per mile than most of the cars sold these days. Frthermore, GM are producing cars that use alternative fuel, such as hydrogen, solar power, and electricity that has a plug to recharge its battery for the next time you drive. To read more about this type of car go to http://www.news.com/2300-13833_3-6222836-1.html?part=rss&tag=6222836&subj=news. Additionaly, an energy alternative that could be used for appliances that use oil would be the power from the sun. To read more on stories about this energy alternative go to http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20071212/wl_csm/ocities_1. All in all, you may find energy alternatives that you thought never exsisted.

Question #4:  Is there a connection between oil and violence in the Middle East?

"Is oil and the violence in the Middle East?" is a question that is one of the most controversial issue that is talked about in today's society. Some believe that one of the main reason that the United States invaded the Middle East because of the need of oil in America. Others believe that the United States army traveled to the Middle East for one reason, and one reason only and that is because we are fighting terrorism and helping countries in the Middle East to develop. As stated in class, one of the main cause for war is humiliation. It might be possilbe

Priya:I agree with Lotan-the first paragraph was very well written and thought-out. I agree that oil has a very negative impact on our environment, especially because of the emissions from cars. However, you could have made the whole blog a bit less formal. I felt it was written in an essay-like format. Also, the blog could have been less focused on cars alone. Overall, your blog was very well thought out.
Lotan H:Wow, I love your first paragraph - it was so creative and eye-catching. I never once sat and thought about our use of oil indirectly. Now that I think about it, MANY of our items used in daily life are actually transported to our homes using oil. Think about it: how many things do you own that say "Made in China"?! When we buy stuff at the store, or in another country on vacation, oil is used in order to get us from place to place. Unfortunately, without the use of oil, our society wouldn't stand where it is now. On the other hand, maybe it would. Maybe if oil never existed, researchers would have worked so hard on creating a reliable energy source that the world would be in a better position than it is now, especially IF there is a so-called "greenhouse effect". Oil was such a useful resource that had no other use. Scientists didn't think about our limited amount of oil until it hit us: there isn't an infinite amount of oil. Soon, the world will be unable to use oil as a source of energy, especially at the rate we are using energy today.
Nilam:I think your opinion on oil being such a negative effect to the environment is voiced well. Yet, I don't necessarily agree with everything you say. Yes, the making and use of cars is bad for the environment, but the amount of positivity they give us such as transportation for distances we cannot walk are irreplaceable. I agree with your opinions on why oil is bad for the environment, but I think you forgot about the positive things about oil. Without oil, it would be impossible to live a world with so many technological advances that help the world in a numerous amount of ways. --Nilam
