1. Is your personal consumption of oil part of the problem?
Our personal consumption of oil actually plays a big part in contributing to the problems of oil.  How do you think we get to school everyday?  We drive... well... our parents do, but you get the point.  Oil is used to heat our houses, so that we don't freeze to death.  In the summer, we use oil to mow the lawn.   Motor boats use a motor to consume the oil. Planes are also required in order to travel afar. Oil can be used for many modes of transportation.

2.  What impact does oil have on our environment?

Oil impacts the environment by damaging it. Since oil is a fossil fuel, when burned it releases carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. These gases deplete the ozone layer and multiply the impact of the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is where heat from the sun enters the Earth's atmosphere.  Usually the heat is expelled back into space, but with extreme amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere it traps the carbon dioxide in the Earth, causing it to heat up.  There are theories that this would cause the poles of the Earth to melt, resulting in a large flood.  It would also change the temperature of the Earth, causing many species of animals to die out or become endangered.  Animals don't have the traits required in order to live in a warmer environment than the one they originated in.  Oil destroys our environment completely.

3.  Are there any viable energy alternatives?
There are many viable energy alternatives.  The problem is that they aren't viable ALL of the time.  Solar-powered energy is only useful during the day, IF the sun is out.  Wind power can only be useful if there is a wind long and strong enough to last all day.  Hydroelectric power is only possible if one is around moving water.  Although these are practical, they are unreliable.

  4.  Is there a connection between oil and violence in the Middle East?

There is a connection between oil and violence in the Middle East. Since oil has been discovered there has been a mad scramble for it.  In some ways, it is a lot like the British Imperialism that occurred in Africa.  It signifies power and wealth. The violence in the Middle East is the result of this.  The individual religious groups, Americans and other nations are fighting for control of the oil since the Middle East contains 66% of the world's oil reserves.  Basically, if a country is in control of the oil, it automatically positively affects its economy.

elisia:The whole presentation and ideas that were presented throughout your writting were amazing! You decorated your page very nicely and your reasons to support your opinion were very clear and the reader could relate to them. Although, I think it would have better if you elaborated on the questions. For question number three, I believe that it is true that we the energy alternatives aren't as reliable as would have been wanted. However, I think that you should have also stated how they could help us today to help improve our environment. Overall, you did a great job!
