1. Is your personal consumption of oil part of the problem?
Yes, our personal consumption of oil is part of this problem. This is because each of us use oil in our everyday lives doing activities such as cooking, driving, washing clothes, etc. Think about it, us American's drive for everything. Going to school, work, after school activities, sometimes even to the local grocery store a block away. By simply walking, biking, or mass transportation, we will be able to save a some of the world's oil supply.
Most of us think oil is an undying resource, however through recent awakenings we now know that it is limited. If every person in American stopped using 1/10 of the oil they use now, it would greatly affect us. It's not just the consumption of oil, its the excessive consumption that is the problem.

What impact does oil have on our environment?
Oil has an extremely bad impact on our environment because it causes air and water pollution. Oil spills affect animals, plant life, and marine resources. It can also cause long-term severe damage to ecosystems and environments. Death of plant life in water, lead to death of many water animals such as fish and other small creatures that consume these plants. These will lead to the death of these small animals, which will lead to lack of food for animals who consume fish and other small marine creatures. As you can see, the death of plant life from oil spills leads to a complete crisis in the food cycle of animals. Another large impact on our environment from oil is the thinning of the ozone layer. The ozone layer is what protects our bodies from the sun's harmful ultra-violet rays. The thinning of the ozone layer also affects us because it causes the chance of skin cancer to increase significantly.

Shown above: This Gannet bird as well as many different species of animals are greatly affected by oil spills. Many animals are lost due to these oil spills, including tropical fish, birds, otters, and many others.

4. Is there a connection between oil and violence in the Middle East?
Yes, there is a connection between oil and violence in the Middle East. For example, the war in Iraq. Part of the reason why we are in Iraq is because of the amount of oil. Although it is is unclear as to what is the real reason why President George W. Bush ordered us to Iraq, one of the stronger suspected reasons is because Iraq has a large supply of oil. Also, countries in the Middle East are constantly argueing and negotiating over land with oil reserves. This arises conflict between nations for who gets the oil-rich land. Oil is the cause for a large majority of the conflict between Middle Eastern nations such as in the Persian Gulf War, when the Iraqis accused the Kuwaitis of pumping oil from the Iraq Kuwait Border without telling or sharing any of the profits. Because of this conflict, the Iraq's declared war on the Kuwaiti's. As a result, many lost their lives.
