Is Oil Evil?

PT.1 Is your personal consumption of oil part of the problem?

I live in Waterford and my family uses a car to get every where. My siblings and I participate in a lot of extra curricular activities that my parents have to drive us every where. Personally I do not think just my family is responsible for the oil crises and polluting the world, we do not use that much oil. If my family went on protest and refused to use oil it would not affect the world at large, but using as little oil as possible is best for the environment and my family tries to use as little oil as possible. So personally how much oil my family consumes may affect the world, but not on a large enough scale that it is a major factor to the oil problem.

PT.2 What impact does oil have on our environment?

Oil has a major impact on the environment. The drilling in the ground of the oil is causing serious pollution. It takes so much gas to power the heavy duty machines to drill the oil. The gas that is being used for oil is causing global warming by harming the precious ozone layer. Oil is needed in order for cars to run. Everyday these cars release dangerous fumes into the environment. Another harmful experience that oil partakes in is oil spills. Oil spills are so dangerous to the entire environment. When oil spills in a body of water it is almost impossible to remove all of it. It thickly coats the animals which limits their ability to fly or swim well. Not only does the oil coat the animals but their food as well. Most animals die because they are poisoned by the oil or they can’t find a clean source of food. With this land environments are affected because they have no food from water environments. This leaves them struggling to survive. Oil is an evil substance to the environment.

This otter has nothin to eat because his food source is covered in oil.

This otter is having a hard time swimming because of

the oil on its fur.

This duck is rescued and going to get cleaned

hopefully before it is too late.

PT.3 Are there any viable energy alternatives?

Since oil, also known as petroleum, will eventually become limited and it is harmful to the entire environment we need oil alternatives. There are some viable energy alternatives but not many. One for instance is making hybrid cars. This isn’t really an alternative it just uses less oil. Basically it is more efficient because it uses the oil as less as it possibly can. Another alternative is vegetable oil. This is used as regular oil but instead is less costly and found in the environment more frequently. Besides that it is also cheaper to process as in gather it. Vegetable oil is a biofuel. There are many other biofuels that could be used as alternative energy for petroleum. There aren’t many alternative energy sources for oil.

PT. 4 Is there a connection between oil and violence in the Middle East?

There is a connection between violence in the Middle East and oil. The first Gulf War was when Iraq invaded Kuwait because Iraq felt they had been cheated out of the oil fields in Kuwait and access to the gulf the whole war was basiclly over oil and the fact that Kuwait had it and Iraq did not. Also OPEC had a monopoly on the oil which caused conflict between OPEC and the major powers in the Middle East area. The monopoly that western powers had on the oil provoked the Middle East to fight back at the western powers to regain control of the oil.

scott masih:Your blog was very interesting to read along with seeing the way you designed your blog. It definitely kept my attention with its deep thoughts on how oil will and has effected the environment. I also enjoyed the way you had corresponded your life with the first question. I also agree on your opinion of personal oil consumption not being major but with billions of families out there that fact right there proves that it is still apart of the problem towards the planet. Overall I believe you did a pretty nice job.
Daniel Liu:I agree with most of this blog, however I do not fully agree with your answer to question number 4. I agree with the statements that says Iraq went to war with Kuwait for oil, and the OPEC embargo, but i agree with almost nothing else. Neither the OPEC embargo nor the western oil monopolies created or caused violence still present in the Middle East. In fact, none of the reasons u gave were reasons for the violence present in the Middle East today. The two most violent conflicts in the Middle East, the Isreali-Muslim cnoflict and the War on Terrorism in Iraq, were caused by political reasons and not oil. But other than my disagreement with your answer to number 4, I thought the rest was very good and well thought out.
Sophia Borroni-Bird:I agree with your method on tackling the second question, that oil is harmful when it leaks into our environment. Oil kills animals and poisons our environment. However, I do not think of oil and an evil substance, I think of the way we are treating oil is excessive. If we used less and conserved more less animals would be effected. Also, if oil used from cars is so harmful everyone should be more concerned with not using it as much oil or maybe instead of driving a mile to the grocery store, walk. I think that would help the environment and not make oil seem to "evil".
