Is Oil Evil?

1.Is your personal consumption of oil part of the problem?

 M.H.-

The problem of oil being that it’s in the Middle East is that the West wants control over it because they don’t have the large amounts of it that’s found in the Middle East, so there are a lot of fights over it. In my opinion, our consumption of oil doesn’t really affect the current problem exactly. There is just a huge amount of oil in the Middle East that the world wants because it is so beneficial to have that supply. Our consumption of oil doesn’t really have anything to do with it, as far as I see it.

 M.T.-

                 You might ask, what problem?

Well it is the problem that the middle eastern countries have oil and the other countries don’t atlist not as much.

I believe that we as humans are the problem. How do each of us get to school everyday? Well each of our parents drive us there unless you can drive your self. The cars we use need oil to run, other wise we wouldn’t get very far. Because we use oil a lot, the U.S. has to get it from somewhere. If they don’t, we wouldn’t be able to drive our cars and I won’t be able to feel the joy of driving one. The only reason the countries that don’t have their own oil want it is because the people living in that country need it to do everyday things.

Some people got so lazy that they use their cars to drop some mail into the mailbox. If people didn’t use their cars for almost everything then the government wouldn’t need so much oil and we wouldn’t be interested in the oil that the Middle Eastern countries have.

We don't just use oil for cars!  When you see aeroplanes flying over you, do you every think about how are they in the air?  Well just like cars aeroplanes need oil to lift of or even land.  When you walk by a building, do you ever think about what the people you to build it.  Most of the time they use plastic and paint.  Plastic is one of the products that is made from oil and so is paint.  What about the clothes on your back.  Shirts that are made from polyester or pantyhose that are made out of nylon are created from oil.  It is because, polyester and nylon are created from oil.  If your clothes get dirty you most likely use a detergent.  Well I bet you know what i am going to say.  Detergent is made out of oil.  When it is time to brush your teeth, you use a toothbrush which is made out of platcit with is created from oil.  YOu also use toothpaste which has glycerin and the glycerin is made out of oil.  So as you can see all of us use oil made products or oil for cars and aeroplans everyday. We also in the U.S.A. use about 17 million barrels of oil in one day.  Because of all these reasons, I do believe that we as human beings are part of the oil problem.

2.What impact does oil have on our environment?

M.H.-

Oil is very necessary in today’s lifestyle. It’s used to power all sorts of the advances we have in our society, such as cars. It’s very useful in all types of things, so it provides a great deal of wealth. However, the use of oil could have negative effects. Too much oil in the air and environment, like from cars can cause pollution, and too much pollution can cause global warming, which isn’t good for our environment.

M.T.-

OIl is not good for our environment.  On the website I found it stated, "The amount of petroleum products ending up in the ocean is estimated at 0.25% of world oil production: about 6 million tons per year" (NASA).  These oil spills are harmful to the animals that live in the water.  Think about this for a second, what if you lived in the ocean?  Would you like having your home destroyed and you covered in something you don't realy like?  How about from the oil spill that happends you sudenly die?  If you wouldn't want this happening to you, why would you want it happening to someone else?  In the last decade it is said to be that more than a billion gallons of oil soilled world wide. When we drive our car or we see an aeroplane, the car and the aeroplane and they couse pollution.  The pollution of the environment couses global warming.  Because of global warmimg, "3,000 walruses die in stampedes tied to climated" (msnbc, 3,000 walruses die in stampedes tied to climate).  This happend because the weather was too warm and so there was a shortage of ice.  The article also say, "disappearance of sea ice caused them to crowd onto the shoreline in extraordinary numbers, deaths some scientists see as another alarming consequence of global warmimg."  They went to the shoreline, because they typically clamber onto the sea ice to rest.

This is the picture of the walruses!

Oil might not effect the environment diractly, but it still effects it.

3.  Are there any viable energy alternatives?

M.H.-  Fossil fuels, hydroelectric energy, nuclear energy, solar power, wind power and geothermal energy are other sources of enegeries.

Videos of oil alternatives!

Right now we don't have an alternative for oil.  An MSNBC article writed by John W. Schoen states, " Thirty years after the “oil shocks” of the 1970s signaled the end of cheap, reliable supplies of oil, the global economy is still dependant on petroleum. And despite billions of dollars in research grants and government subsidies, no alternative energy source has yet been developed to replace it" (John W. Schoen, 2)  We are dependant on oil until we find a better solution.  We have been looking and looking for the alternative and we still haven't found it.  Most likely there is no alternative for oil and we as people have to find a way to stop being so dependant on oil.  We should stop usinf noney that we don't have to find alternative for oil that we will never find.  The first step we as a nation should take is trying to stop depending on oil too much.  Some of the ways are by walking to work!  Unless you live really far away, ride your bike.  Not only will we be saving oil and not being too dependant on it, but we also will keep our health up.

4.  Is there a connection between oil and violence in the Middle East?

M.T.-

I think there is a connection between oil, and the violence it faces with the US. Oil is a very valuable resource, since it’s a main source of power, which brings a lot of wealth. The Middle East has huge amounts of oil, which countries such as the US want a hold of, since oil is vital to everyone, anyone would like to have that huge supply. Countries like the US fight for the oil in the Middle East because they want it, and the Middle East believes that its there’s because its their’s and in their land. They fight over control for oil, which is the cause of this violence in the Middle East.

M.T.-

I believe that that there is a connection betweent oil and violence in the Middle East.  The only reason that there is violence in the Middle East is because countries want their oil.  The Middle East, not like the other countries has more oil than anyone else.  Every other countrie is trying to get their hands on it.  Buying the oil all the time is too expensive, so they want their own.  If countries are willing to pay, some just wount sell their oil at all.  Oil is what started the violence.  I don't blame the countries for wanting oil.  It is important because everyday we use a product that is made out of oil or we use the oil to put in the tanks of our cars.  If we didn't have oil, we wouldn't make some of the types of materials to make clothes.  Oil is important to every country and I understand why they would want to het their hands on the oil in other countries.

 Work Sited:

Adam G.'s Response: I thought your blog was nice. I like the different color text and your picture. I think it could have used another picture and you need forgot to uses quotes. You needed one quote for every response to a question.  Besides that I thought your information was good and I liked your "bloggish" writing style.

Rasseil A.'s Response:  Wow! you must have spent a lot of time making your blog look soo good.  I agree with all the things you are saying.  I also agree with Adam.  I think you could use another picture.  Great job!!!

Maria R's response: I thought your responses were really interesting and I like that you are very realistic, since lots of people nowadays try to hide from the facts. However, I disagree with what M.T said about us never finding another energy source. I think it is very possible that we will find another energy source, but when M.T. listed all those everyday objects that are made with/from oil, it made me realize that even when we stop using oil for energy, we will probably still be slightly dependent on it because it is an ingredient in making all of our plastics. That's important to know, so thanks for helping to bring it up.

Nick W.'s Response:  Nice Job! The blog looks great and your reasponses are very well thought out.  The only thing i would change would be the colors of your text.  The colors make it hard to read, a blog normally in black.  Other than that I thought your blog was written very nice.
