Of course it is. And I would go farther to say that our consumption is the ONLY part of the problem. Without our reliance, oil as a resource would be harmless. If you see a bucket of oil on a table, you don’t run away screaming for fear of assault and battery, you say “Hey, a can of oil, I can use this to power my appliances”. The fact that oil is our main source of energy gives companies a lot of power to control the price and manipulate us. The decreasing supply of the substance is also going to be a problem because we cannot use something for energy if it isn’t there. That’s why our personal consumption IS the cause of oil distress.

Oil has a great impact on our environment. Air pollution is an example of how oil affects the environment. When factories burn fossil fuels, they are releasing many toxins and such in the air. When oil is burned in cars or motorcycles, the exhaust pipe releases more toxins into the air. Oil has a great affect on our environment. Another effect that oil has on our environment is what is it causing by causing war between many countries. The War in Iraq continues to bring our oil prices up and our money down. Oil affects our money because we need to pay for the military to sustain their position in Iraq.

One word sums my opinion on this issue up. DUH! Of course there are alternative energy sources available! It isn’t even a matter of the fact that they cost more; the problem is that practically all our vehicles run on oil products. This constricts our consumption to oil products. This is a big problem because when it runs out we will be, for all intents and purposes, screwed. We will no longer have anything with which to run our machines, and the country will be in serious trouble. We must start investing in alternate energy sources and begin for the inevitable oil run-out. My favorite alternate form of this energy is wind power. I see it as the purest form of energy attainment, and with zero byproducts, it’s difficult to hold a candle to. The way we can harness this type of energy is by using gargantuan windmill structures. These consist of fan shaped blades that are pushed by the wind and made to rotate. The tailfin on the rear ensures that the rig will be facing into the wind for maximum output. This is only one form of alternate energy among many such as solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric. Any of these could very well be the necessary replacement for oil as a resource.

Mariya T. - You should add pictures to your blog. But I agree with what Tony said. That we are part of the problem. And for the alternative energy, I think we could manage with out oil, even if the cars do run on oil. It doesn't mean that we can't creat a car that rans on something else.
Caitlin M.- Ishaan- I agree with you that we need to fix the oil problem, but when you described the many ways we use oil, you just barely touched the surface of the millions of products that use oil. You only talked about the ones you need to put fuel into to run, but there are so many more. T.V.'s, computers, the list goes on and on, pretty much anything in our lives, really. If you think about all of the plastics we have and the many other things, gasoline may be the biggest lone contributer, but there is still a far more amount of oil- consuming products that there is little awareness that they even contain oil.
